Tiputini Adventure
This 10-day trip is put together for the more adventurous people
who like the outdoors and like to get to know a well preserved primary
lowland tropical rainforest with its interesting fauna and flora. As the
name implies, half of the days are spent on
and around the River Tiputini, which flows through an area
with long stretches of absent human settlements and pure virgin forests with
part of the trip leading through the Yasuni National Park.
The return to Coca is on the Napo after visiting the Yasuni river
and Jatuncocha Lagoon.
This excursion was especially put together for you,
who like to have the chance to observe larger animals, like caimans,
tapirs, anacondas, capybaras and anteaters.
Another attraction is the presence of river dolphins and
various species of monkeys.
Day 1:
We start our adventure by driving from Quito to San Rafael Waterfalls, the highest
and mightiest fall in Ecuador which lies in the higher Amazon region and
is also famous for its bird population.
We will spend the first night
there putting up our tents on a small plateau overlooking the cascades. On a clear day we have also a splendid view
of the active volcano El Reventador.
Day 2: In the morning we explore the area on small
trails in this region of 1500m which represents a transitional forest from
montane to the lower tropical rainforest. On the hike we may see cock of the rocks, oropendulas, tanagers
and many other birds. Apart from that many flowering plants like
orchids, bromeliads and heliconias make their home there. After lunch we
drive on to Coca, where we arrive after another 4 hour and spend the
night there in a hotel.
Day 3: Today later in the morning we drive down by car from Coca on
the road leading across the Napo and after some 3 hours we will reach the Tiputini
River, where the canoe and its crew will await us. We change into the
boat and start our trip down the river. On the first stretch we still
see some farms of Quechua Indians on the left side of the river,
where else on the south side Huaroani territory begins. The night we spend
for first time in tents in the forest near a tiny lagoon.
Day 3: We move farther down the river still observing human settlements
and passing two bridges, which lead to new oil fields deep in the Yasuni
National Park.
Afterwards the pristine virgin forest by entering the Yasuni National Park begins with chances of observing wildlife like tapirs, capybaras,
turtles, etc... Birds are always present with larger herons, caracaras,
eagles and high soaring vultures. The night we spend on a sand bank
after taking a refreshing river bath.
Day 4: Moving along the river we observe
more animals, especially many more birds
like the noisy macaws, caciques and oropendulas. On the way we pass the river Aucayacu and a
scientific research station. We
also visit a small lagoon and a small river if
water levels allow entrance. Later we put up another campsite on
a river bank which serves for the next two nights.
Day 5:
Today we take a rest from boat travel and
undertake a longer hike into the rainforest to get to
know some of the trees and plants of this biological diverse
region. Insects are also very abundant in the
forest and there are chances of encountering bands of monkeys in the
tree tops. Back at the campsite we try our luck at fishing.
Day
6: We continue on by boat and finally reach the Napo river,
from where move downriver to Nuevo Rocafuerte, the border
town to Peru, which we reach over one hour. There we have to register again with the marine and you have to
pay the national park entrance fee. Also some cold drinks can be had
in this little river town. We then move on and a
little downriver, right at the border, enter the Yasuni river. Here we can encounter river dolphins,
especially at the entrance to the Jatuncocha lagoon, which we reach after 1
hour. We put up our tents in a forest clearing and
in the evening we go out
again by boat to look for caimans and other nocturnal animals.
Day
7: Today we go out by canoe at sunrise to observe
the varied birdlife of the lagoon. Herons, weaver birds, fish eagles
among others wake up to start their activities. A little later we arrive
at a spot where parrots gather to lick rich
minerals at a low spot. Afterwards we return for breakfast and then we undertake a hike in the surrounding
tropical forest for more exploration. Afternoon is spent swimming or
fishing for piranhas and other
fish abundant in this beautiful lake.
Day
8: The morning is used to go out on the lake again and after lunch we leave the beautiful lagoon of Jatuncocha and move up the Yasuni river till we reach again the Napo. After a
short stop in Nuevo Rocafuerte we move farther upriver where we look for
a nice island to spend the last night in tents on this broad river.
Day 9: After breakfast we continue our upriver
ride on the Napo. First we pass the village and military outpost of
Paņacocha and later the ferry of Pompeii. In the afternoon after some
6-7 hours we finally reach Coca, where we spend the last night on our
adventure.
Day 10: We drive back to Quito by way of Loreto. We will pass the Sumaco volcano and stop in
Baeza for lunch. Before reaching Quito, we stop in Papallacta at the
Hot Springs to relax after the long journey through the tropical
wilderness.
