Yasuni National Park
This 11-day trip is put together for adventurous
people and is a demanding tour into the Primary
Lowland Rainforest. It takes part in
the Yasuni National Park on the rivers Shiripuno, Cononaco and
Tiguino.
Part of this area of the rainforest is distant to any human settlement and is pure virgin
tropical rainforest.
There is a good chance but of course no guarantee that we get to observe
larger animals, like jaguars, tapirs or anacondas
in their natural habitat. We also visit the native Huaroanis
in their villages.
Day 1:
We start our adventure by driving from Quito to Coca, a 7 to 8 hour
trip. On the way we will stop at the San Rafael Waterfalls, the highest
and mightiest fall in Ecuador which lies in the higher Amazon region and
is also famous for its bird population. We will spend 2 hours there hiking in
the area and having lunch. On a clear day we have also a splendid view
of the active volcano El Reventador. We spend the night in Coca and get
ready for tomorrow.
Day 2: In the morning we drive down south from Coca on
the road, called Via Auca, towards Bataburo where after 3 hours we will reach the Shiripuno River, where the canoe and its crew will await us. We change
into the boat and start our trip down the river. We pass a Huaroani
village where we stop to visit and continue on to put our first camp
site on a sand bank in the river.
Day 3: After breakfast we move farther down the
river, observing many birds, like macaws, vultures, caracara falcons,
herons, kingfisher and many more. Late afternoon we
reach the Lower Cononaco where we spend the next night.
Day 4: At the first light we get up and visit a mud area
where large groups of Amazon parrots meet to feed on the mud. Hopefully
by staying undetected the parrots will descend, otherwise they will fly
noisily overhead from one place to another. After breakfast, we
undertake a long hike into the tropical rainforest to learn about the
trees and plants of this important ecosystem. Afternoons we spend
relaxing on the shore and try our hand at fishing.
Day 5:
We navigate on the now- much broader river till we reach the river Tiguino.
But before returning upriver we move farther down the Cononaco, where we
put up our next camp.
Day
6: We undertake an early visit to the forest and
continue then by boat farther downriver. On the way we pass a Huaroani
village, where we pay our respect and dues. In the evening we go out
looking for caimans and other nocturnal animals.
Day
7: We spend the day by hiking into the forest and short
excursions on the river. This is a good area for seeing the larger
animals of the tropical rainforest.
Day
8: We turn back upriver and leave the Cononaco and move into the
smaller Tiguino river, where we spend another night, putting up our
tents on a sandbank.
Day 9: We move farther up the Tiguino, a beautiful
river with overhanging vegetation and get our
last chances to see anacondas, tapirs and other larger animals. On a
sandbank we put up our last camp site on the trip.
Day 10: At noon we reach the bridge spanning
the Tiguiņo, where our transport awaits us and we drive back by car to
Coca.
Day 11: We drive back to Quito by way of
Loreto. We will pass the Sumaco volcano and stop in Baeza for lunch.
Before reaching Quito, we stop in Papallacta at the
Hot Springs to relax after the long journey through the tropical
rainforest reserve of Yasuni.
