Biological Facts

Epidendrum is a large genus with some 1100 species growing in a wide range of habitats from southern USA to Argentina. This Greek word means "upon trees" and refers to their epiphytic nature (although quite a few species are also terrestrial). The majority do not have pseudobulbs and have long reedlike stems. The flowers are small to medium sized and grow very often in dense bunches. The lip is united with the column to form a nectar tube but without actually offering nectar.
