Cochasqui was built by the Cara-Quitus people
as a mostly ceremonial site at the foot of
Mojanda mountain, some 40 km north of Quito, which was at that time
the center of their empire. The earthen mounds, completely man-made with
huge clay bricks, had buildings on the top serving various purposes.
On one was found channels pointing to the volcanoes and holes with stone
markers used probably as a calendar. |
