Valdivia
& Other Coastal Cultures

TOP:  Some of the earliest ceramics found in Ecuador and in South America are from Valdivia dating back to around 3500 BC. On top Venus figurines and common household pots. In the second row head images. The Spondylus shell (to the left) was an important trading good in the antique times and believed to have served as a kind of money. Shells were found in the Amazon and along Peruvian coast proving widespread trade. This shell only occurs naturally along Ecuador's southwestern coast.

BOTTOM: Later cultures followed Valdivia along the Ecuadorian coast and exhibited a higher degree in techniques and artistry. Below you find some exhibits from the Machallila, Manteña, Chorrea and Guancala cultures.
