 Sharks & Rays

   RAYS
are related to the sharks and like them are cartilaginous fish. They are well known and easily recognized by their shape, seeming to float through the water. They are harmless in the Galapagos waters with the only danger being to step on a stingray lying on the shallow sea bottom.

  SHARKS
are cartilaginous fish, meaning that their skeleton is made up by cartilage and not bones as is the case with the majority of other fish. They represent a group of animals which are very successful evolutionarily reaching back some 460 million years. Most species are harmless in Galapagos as long as they are not intentionally provoked.
