Marine
iguanas are colonial and often found close together
on the lava shores.
Fernandina shows traces of recent eruptions from La Cumbre, like
this cracked lava flow some 100 hundred years old.Galapagos Hawk is the only raptor on the isles and without any
enemies with the exception of man, which almost brought
it to extinction on
some islands.
Lava
flow which reached all the way into the sea. The black lava is
normal of Galapagos as its magma is mostly basaltic.
On Fernandina, the flightless cormorants nest on the ground with
nests of simple sticks and other materials.
This cormorant species is endemic to the islands and the only
flightless one in the world. Having arrived here and not found any
enemies, it lost its ability to fly and became a much better diver and
swimmer. It is therefore also the largest cormorant specie in the world. The useless drying of the stunted wings is thought to be an old
reflex left from former flying days.
Marine turtles enter into phases of little activities. That's when
barnacles can attach themselves to their shells.
Lava cactus grow right in lava flows without any visible top soil.
