Los Gemelos, Spanish for The Twins, are two volcanic depressions on
the highest part of Santa Cruz. The larger of the
two volcanic pits is featured here.
This region also boasts of a beautiful
Scalasia forest with trees covered by many epiphytes.
In contrast to the dry coastal lowlands, the highlands are covered
by mist in the garua (foggy)season and receive thus much more moisture.and
support a more luxuriant vegetation.
Scalesia plants belong to the sunflower family and are abundant in
those altitudes.
In the forest, small birds like Darwin finches and Vermillion
flycatchers can be seen.
The smaller of the twin volcanic sinkholes.
Those depressions occurred after magma chamber became empty and the
above ground caved in.
