Las Bachas is a
white sand beach ideal for swimming on the southwest side of Santa Cruz.
White sand is interspersed with rocks where easy and safe snorkelling
can be practiced.A Great Blue Heron on the outlook.
The beach is also a nesting site for the Pacific Green SeaTurtle.
A nest is dug in the sand and covered again. The tracks left of the female
are still seen. A young emerges from the sand. It is very vulnerable at this stage as its shell is
still very soft.
Once the baby turtles hatch, they find their way to the ocean but many
will not make it due to predators like the Great Blue Heron.
Local youth will watch the site to assure safe passage of
the babies.
Rocks serve as resting place for the Brown Pelican and habitat
for the colorful Sally Lightfoot Crabs, which are found on all islands
in plentiful numbers.
Whimbrel and Greater Flamingo wading in the small lagoon located near
the beach. Yellow Warbler hidden in the tree.
