 International Calls
Long Distance Calling became so much easier in the last years with the splitting up of the state telephone company EMETEL and the introduction of private wireless phone operators. Nowadays you find in all major and even smaller villages phone centers with telephone booths run by Porta, Andinatel (Pacifictel) or Movistar which offer reasonable rates for you to phone home ($1 to $2.- per minute depending on destination). You go in and give your phone number to the employees inside and they will connect you and charge you after the phone call. To phone to Ecuador you have to use the international code 593 and then the local area code without the 0 (see below in Local Calls). To phone me for instance in Quito at (02) 222 4393, you would dial 00 593 2 222 4393.

 Local Calls
Local Calls can be made from any of many phone centers as described above. To phone me in Quito  again at (02) 222 4393, you would dial 222 4393 if you are in Quito or in the province of Pichincha. In the rest of the country you would dial 02 222 4393. Phoning a mobile phone you always dial the 08 or 09 regardless where you are in the country. Also the charge is higher than for local calls.

Internet
Internet started a communication's revolution in the country and nowadays it is widespread in public places as many locals depend on it but do not have it at home. Almost in any street in major cities you encounter places offering internet and even in remote villages you might find an internet connection. Rates in the bigger towns are very cheap with an hourly cost of less of $1.- Also many internet places offer long distance phone services. Most of phone centers as discussed above under International calls offer also internet.
