La Toilta
is an island in Northern Esmeraldas province, 15 minutes by boat from La Tola and was 2000 years ago the main center of the La Tolita Culture, famous for its pottery and metal works, especially gold jewels (see gold art exhibit). Today the culture and its protagonists are all vanished and the island is inhabited by new people, mostly descendants of African slaves. Most of the precious work can be admired in the Archaeological museum in the Casa de Cultura in Quito but some exhibits are left on the island, making a visit worthwhile.
