Indigenous groups present presidential candidate
Pachakuti, the political arm of the indigenous confederation of
Ecuador chose Auki Tituaņa as its presidential candidate. This
selection came a few days after Antonio Vargas, a former indigenous
leader, announced his candidacy. A split in the Indian community is
feared because of the running of those two leaders.
Nature
Heavy rains in the coastal regions
Some regions of the coast, especially in the province of Guayas and
Manabi are inundated by heavy rains. Some expert speculate on a new
"El Niņo" effect as the sea waters off the coast are warmer
than usual but others deny it. Diseases like Dengue fever and Paludismo
start to appear again with some cases confirmed.
Society
Emigration by Ecuadorians
continues
The stream of Ecuadorians leaving the
country in search of work and a better life continues at a rate of 15
000 emigrants a month. Since 1999, close to a million Ecuadorians, including many professionals have left
the country legally or illegally.
The preferred destinations are the United States,
Spain and South American countries. Money sent from those
emigrants is nowadays the most important source of foreign currency,
eclipsing traditional exports, like banana or oil.
Increased Military Presence at the Colombian border
Ecuadorian forces moved more personnel into the the Amazon region
close to the Colombian border. This area is becoming more affected by
the Colombian civil war and drug battles as the Plan Colombia displaces
more people towards Ecuador. More than 100.000 Colombians live now in
the country as refugees. Other provinces getting more and more affected are coastal
Esmeraldas and El Carchi in the Andes.
Sports
Ecuador continues its World Cup preparations.
Ecuador lost 1:0 to the United States in a
game played in the USA with a team, where important players, like
Alex Aguinaga and Agustin Delgado were absent. After the great win
against Turkey in Europe, the team experienced a small setback but is
still positive about its chances to reach the second round.
