Finca
Colibri
is located
in
the
Pululahua Crater, which
is near Mitad del Mundo, the Equatorial Line
Monument
and an hour northwest of Quito. This huge volcanic crater, one of the largest in the world and one of only two
which is inhabited by people, is classified by most scientists as active but let me assure you that it is presently peacefully asleep.
It is part of the bigger Pululahua
Geo-botanical Reserve, which also includes areas outside the crater,
mainly a deep forested river gorge. Therefore the whole region offers spectacular scenery, a diverse vegetation with quite a few distinct habitats, which is home
to a varied and rich
flora and fauna
and of course volcanic-geological
aspects,
for those of you, who are interested in that subject matter.
At the bottom of the crater, smaller farms are located where
natives, most of them descendants of Indians, who lived there since historical
Inca
times, still work their land by hand or with the help of
an oxen
team and mostly grow corn together with
beans and keep a few domestic animals. No farm machinery or other
outside noise disturbs the serene atmosphere of this special place.
Our Vacation Farm is part of it and its
location
is in the flat
front part of the crater at the foot of the Sincholagua Peak, highest
elevation along the crater walls. The farm consists of pastures for our six horses and a larger garden, which we use for growing our own organic vegetables and fruits. A romantic little farm house with all the amenities for a pleasant stay,
serves as shelter and base for explorations.
We invite you to experience this
unique area by renting our farm
and staying there by yourself to explore its beauty on your own. It is a
great place to get away from everything as there is absolute peace with
nobody molesting you.
Outdoors activities
include horseback riding, mountain biking trips, hiking excursions on
nature trails, expeditions in jeep and some adventure fun stuff. So get
ready to explore this magical place
with its many wonderful surprises (click for
pictures).
