B9   BIKE  PACKAGE

This biking excursion of 8 days takes us through mountainous and cloudforest regions on both sides of the Cordilleras and to some tropical areas of the country. It is mostly downhill biking and therefore suited to most people in good physical shape. It is one of the best ways for adventurers to experience Ecuador's varied landscapes and biodiversity and leaves you with an unforgettable impression of our country.

Day 1     We start our biking adventure in the Pululahua crater, where you start your first leg of your tour. Arriving from Quito after a 1-hour ride by jeep, you climb up to the park entrance and then follow the steep road down to the crater. After 3 hours on a fairly good maintained gravel road you arrive at the farm where lunch awaits you. The afternoon is spent at the farm, doing something of your choice like relaxing, hiking, horseback riding or more biking. We spend the night at the Finca Colibri.

Day 2    You start early in the morning biking out of the crater towards Nieblí, passing a deep gorge and continuing alongside it till the end of the road. After lunch spent at the river we had back towards Niebli where once again you get on bikes and take the road out to Calicali. At the Hot Springs just before entering the main road the jeep awaits you and brings you back to Quito. This day you spend 6 hours on bike on fairly good gravel roads, mostly downhill but with some uphill struggles. On the way back to Quito we may stop at Mitad del Mundo to visit the Equator Line Monument.

Day 3     We leave Quito early in the morning and head south towards Lloa, a small agricultural village SW of the city. From there we start driving up to the refuge, which is located close to the top of Guagua and arrive there after a 2-hour ride. We hike or bike then up to the crater rim where we have a great view of this enormous active volcanic crater. From there we start our biking expedition going rapidly downhill on a passable dirt road. In Lloa you pass on an asphalt road for an uphill struggle to the pass, which leads into Quito. Passing that then you descend furthermore on a cobbled road towards Quito passing smaller farms. Before entering Quito we pick you up and drive you back by jeep to the Bed&Breakfast Parque Italia.

Day 4
Early in the morning, we drive to the southern part of Quito we arrive after one hour at San Juan, a small village, located at around 3300m, our starting point. You descend by bike then down the old road Quito – Santo Domingo to Alluriquin, another small village located at around 1200m. We pass from Paramo to sub- tropical region descending the Western Cordillera towards the coast on a gravel road along beautiful vegetation. That region is also a famous bird watching area; so do not be surprised to see some exotic birds. In Alluriquin we pick you up and spend the night in a hostel in the tropical coastal lowlands of Ecuador.

Day 5
On this day we take a well-deserved rest from the bike and visit  a tropical rainforest reserve near Concordia, where among many other things, you find huge tropical trees, 500 years or more old. After the hike through the forest we head by jeep up to Zumbahua, where we spend the night.

Day 6
In the morning we begin biking the 14km of dirt road to the crater lake of Quilotoa. After visiting the surroundings and hiking down to the lake, we continue biking towards Sigchos, a further 23km on a bad dirt road. On this track in this remote area you are able to feel the solitude of the area and its people. From there we drive on by jeep to Baños where we spend our next night.

Day 7    We start in the morning from the town of Baños, biking  on an asphalt road to our first stop, the waterfall of Agoyan, which is located 30 minutes down the road, just before the tunnels. Entering the tunnel, the asphalt turns to a narrow gravel road with many curves. Our next stop is the cable car, just outside Rio Verde. This motorized cable car stretches across the gorge and is the longest one in Ecuador. On the other side we visit a small waterfall and return then by car back to our bikes. After 20 minutes on the bike we reach the town of Rio Verde, where we stop to visit the impressive waterfall of Pailon del Diablo. After this excursion on foot we get biking again descending down to Puyo, which is 60 km down the road from Baños. We continue on by jeep then to Tena, where we spend the night.

Day 8      We leave early in the morning Tena and head to Papallacta, where we spend a few hours relaxing in the hot pools of this famous Hot Springs. After that we continue on by jeep to the pass at 4000m, which leads into Quito valley. There you get on the bikes for the last time and head down on a good asphalt road for your last stretch of our biking expedition.
