M2 CHIMBORAZO At 6310 m Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador and located in the Western Cordillera, 150 km to the SW of Quito and 20 km NW of Riobamba. For this climb you need ice-climbing equipment, excellent physical condition and lots of stamina. Most of the time, it is not a difficult climb but there are periods when hard ice conditions due to ash cover from Tungurahua (black ice) makes it very challenging. Avalanches are also a problem on that climb and proper pre-cautions are to be taken. M2a : 2 days / 1 night Day 1 We leave the Hotel Parque Italia at 9 a.m. and head towards Riobamba, arriving at the first refuge at about 1.30 p.m. We have lunch there and afterwards hike 30 min. up to the second refuge at 5000m. In the afternoon we prepare for the ascent with last minute testing of equipment and abilities. After a 6 p.m. dinner we rest/sleep in preparation for the early morning climb. Day 2 We begin our climb at midnight after breakfast and reach the summit in 7 to 8 hours. Depending on weather conditions we spend up to half an hour on top and then begin the 4-hour descent back to the refuge. We arrive in Quito late afternoon.
