M7 ALTAR It is located in the Eastern Cordillera 170 km south of Quito and forms part of Sangay National Park. This extinct volcano boasts of 9 separate peaks with Obispo at 5320m the highest. To climb this beautiful mountain, it takes a high degree of technical ability and is definitely not for beginners but only for experienced climbers. M7 : 5 days / 4 nights Day 1 We leave Quito at 9 a.m. and head south on the Pan American Highway towards Riobamba, where we stop for lunch. Afterwards we make our way for Chaniag, a small town and starting point for the Altar region., which we reach on secondary roads. We stay the first night there. Day 2 After breakfast we start out to a arae called Campo Italiano, our base camp for the climb. We hike takes several hours and we ahve to carry in all our equipment. After lunch we check the route for the following morning and rest around the camp. Day 3 Our climb begins at 3 a.m. and it takes around 10 hours to reach the summit. On our descent we try to reach the Italiano base camp. If unable to, we do a bivouac at the foot of the mountain. Day 4 After breakfast we return towards Chaniag and stay there for night putting up a tent site again. Day 5 After breakfast we return to Quito by car where we arrive late afternoon.
