D10 GUAYLLABAMBA
This town with the difficult name is located 1 hour north of Quito in a
hot and dry valley of 2000m. It boasts of many fruit trees,
especially avocados and chirimoyas and Quito's zoo is located
there, which is the main attraction and which we visit to get to know
the contry's animals. That trip also let's us make a nice roundtrip
through the Quito valley with its many small villages with their
imposing churches.
9.00 a.m.: We drive
north on the Pan-American highway , crossing the Guayllabamba river before
entering the town of the same name.
10.30 a.m.: We arrive at the
zoo and start our tour through its premises. With a few exceptions all
animals housed there are native ones from all the different nature
regions of Ecuador. Although kind of sad seeing the animals caged in
small housings it is the best opportunity to get to know them as many
will be seldom encountered in the wild.
1.00 p.m.: We continue by
car towards Cayambe but turn then south again. At a viewing spot, we
stop to enjoy the great sights into the valley and on clear days
we have also splendid views to the
snow covered peaks of Cayambe and Cotopaxi.
2.00 p.m.: We arrive in
Quinche, which is the famous for its church and a major catholic site in
the country. The Virgin Mary appeared there and the whole village is
devoted to that event.
3.00 p.m.: We return to Quito where we arrive after
another 1 hour drive.
