T12 PASOCHOA
This mountain forest reserve is located 30 km S of Quito and is
an old, heavily eroded and extinct volcano with its own special environment.
It
boasts of many different plants and birds and has well-kept paths inside the forest and into the higher
paramo region. As the altitude does not pass 4200m, it is perfect
for that first hike in the Andes and to get well acclimatized for future
higher climbs.
T12a : 1 day
Day 1 We leave Quito at 6 a.m. and arrive at
the park entrance at 7.30 a.m. We start our hike then through its forest reserve
enjoying its varied plant and animal life. After 3 hours we reach the end of the
forest and enter in its paramo region. From there it is another 3
hours climb to the peak at 4200m. The hike to the top is along the rim of its
crater with some steep parts to manage along it. After having lunch on top we
begin our descent to the entrance of the park where we head back by jeep to
Quito.

T12b : 2 days / 1 night
Day 1 We leave Quito in the morning and arrive after a 1 ½ -hour
drive at the Park Entrance. After setting up our tents and a small lunch we
start exploring the forest on the various paths in the Park. We explore the
different plants and hopefully get to see some of the many birds, which are
populating this area.
Day 2 On this day we leave very early in the
morning to reach the top of the crater rim at 4200m. The hike takes us first
through the forest and then on through Paramo alongside the crater rim to the
top. We reach the top after a tiring 6-hour hike. After lunch on top we return
to our camp and prepare for our drive back to Quito, where we arrive late
afternoon.
