T8 PICHINCHAS
The Pichinchas are two volcanoes, Guagua, the active and higher one
at
4794m and Rucu, extinct and slightly lower at 4780m, lying just
to the
west of Quito. Both are easily reached and climbed and give everybody a
great opportunity to acclimatize and enjoy high altitude regions and
its distinct plant and animal life at the same time.

( Rucu Pichincha )
Day 1
We leave the Hotel Parque Italia at 6 a.m. and drive to the southern
part of Quito and head then up to Cruz Loma, the hill which boasts the
two antenna visible from Quito. From there we have a great view of the
whole city. We then hike through Paramo region to the base of Rucu where
we arrive in about 3 hours. Another ½ hour climb through rocks gets us
to the top, where we have lunch and enjoy the great views. Afterwards we
hike back to Cruz Loma and then head back by jeep to Quito.

( Guagua Pichincha)
Day 1 We leave Quito at 6 a.m. and head
south to Lloa, a small agricultural village SW of the city. Passing the
town, we head up to 3800m, where you start your hike up to the refuge at
4600m. After a short break of the 2 hour ascent, we climb then to the
crater rim and volcanic activities permitting down into the crater, where
we can observe the lava domes from close up. We return then back to the
crater rim and climb the peak of Guagua Pichincha at 4794m.

Day 1 see
above for Guagua, instead of returning to Quito where we spend the night
in the refuge.
Day 2 After breakfast we start our hike
towards Rucu Pichincha passing another peak called El Padre Encantado.
After a 3 to 4 hour hike through beautiful mountain region we reach Rucu
where we have lunch. In the afternoon we return to the refuge and head
back to Quito.
