T9 QUILOTOA
Quilotoa is a small crater lake located 1 hour west of Latacunga on the road to the coast.
There start also the Toachi canyon, a steep river valley cutting
its way through to the Pacific coast. Both are located high in the Andes and offers
beautiful scenery and great back-country hiking. This region is also populated by many Indians, still living and farming in the old
traditional ways of their forefathers.
T9a: 2 Days / 1 Night
Day 1 After leaving
Quito we drive south on the Pan-American Highway till we reach after 2 hours the
turn-off towards Sigchos. After another 2 hours on a mountainous road we
arrive in Chugchilan, a small village high in the Western Cordillera. In
the afternoon we hike around in the region which is comprised mostly of
the Toachi valley and offers beautiful views. We spend the night in
town.
Day 2 Early
in the morning we get up and drive to Quilotoa where we arrive after 1
hour. After enjoying the first look into this impressive crater lake, we
descend on a small path down to the bottom of the volcano and to the
lake shore. We spend some time down there and then return to the crater
rim after a 1 hour climb. We continue on by jeep to Zumbahua, a small
town half hour south of Quilotoa. From that town it is a 4 hour drive
back to Quito, where we arrive late afternoon.

Day 3 Today we trek around this beautiful
crater lake, which takes around 6 hours. The trek follows the crater rim
and gives us great views into the caldera and the adjacent Toachi valley
with its many deep gullies and farming areas. After lunch we return
to Quito by way of Zumbahua.
